What You Don't Know About Sourcing

In honor of my team taking a necessary step in our growth and hiring our first dedicated Talent Sourcer, I figured I would focus this week’s posts on the act of sourcing.

Sourcing, by definition in the world of Talent Acquisition, is a proactive approach to identifying, attracting, and engaging qualified candidates for specific roles. Making sure your organization can attract top talent has become more challenging than ever, and sourcing plays a huge role in that process.

If you work at Amazon or Google and have thousands of candidates coming to you, maybe it does not matter, but for us normal folk who need to find specific talent for hard to fill roles, sourcing can be the difference between success and failure, due to all of the benefits I’ve got laid out below.

1. Access to a Diverse Pool of Talent:

Sourcing enables organizations to tap into a diverse pool of talent beyond traditional recruitment methods. By actively seeking out candidates through various channels such as job boards, social media, professional networks, and referrals, your organization can expand their candidate pool and ensure a more inclusive hiring process. This diversity brings fresh perspectives, innovation, and a broader range of skills and experiences to the organization.

2. Proactive Talent Identification:

Sourcing allows recruiters to proactively identify potential candidates who may not be actively seeking new opportunities. This proactive approach helps organizations stay ahead of their hiring needs and build relationships with passive candidates who are not visible through traditional job postings. By building a talent pipeline, companies can quickly fill vacancies, reduce time-to-hire, and avoid the costly consequences of sudden talent gaps.

3. Quality over Quantity:

Effective sourcing focuses on finding quality candidates who are the right fit for the organization's culture, values, and job requirements. By actively searching for and evaluating candidates, recruiters can ensure a higher quality of talent acquisition. This leads to better employee retention, improved productivity, and overall organizational success.

4. Enhancing Employer Branding:

Sourcing plays a vital role in building and enhancing an organization's employer brand. By actively reaching out to candidates and engaging with them throughout the hiring process, organizations can create a positive candidate experience. This positive impression not only attracts top talent but also improves the company's brand reputation in the job market.

5. Cost and Time Savings:

Effective sourcing strategies can significantly reduce the time and cost associated with talent acquisition. By proactively identifying and engaging with candidates, recruiters can fill job vacancies faster and minimize the need for expensive external recruitment agencies. Additionally, sourcing helps organizations avoid the costs of a lengthy hiring process and potential turnover by ensuring the right candidates are hired from the start.

6. Competitive Advantage:

When hiring for high-priority roles, organizations need a competitive edge to attract and retain top talent. Sourcing provides that advantage by allowing companies to identify and engage with candidates before their competitors. By building relationships with potential candidates early on, organizations can position themselves as the employer of choice and stand out from their competitors.

By implementing effective sourcing strategies, your organization can build a strong foundation for success in talent acquisition.
