From Negative to Positive: The Mindset Shift We All Need

A positive mindset is not just about being all sunshine and rainbows all the time.

It’s about having an outlook on life that focuses on the good stuff, even when things get tough.

This article is here to equip you with some methods, tips, and tricks I have used to help me, a naturally negative thinker, have a more positive outlook on things that happen in life.

Understand the Power of Thoughts:

Our thoughts can completely mess with our lives.

Ever noticed how one little negative thought can send you into a downward spiral of bad feelings? That’s because our thoughts have a serious impact on how we feel and act. They’re the boss of our emotions, calling the shots and setting the tone for the day.

You can counter this with cognitive restructuring. It’s like hitting the reset button on your brain. Instead of letting those negative thoughts run the show, you learn to challenge them and reframe them in a more positive light.

For this exercise, it’s all about awareness:

  • Start paying attention to the thoughts that pop into your head throughout the day: As you’re working on a project, you might notice thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “I always mess things up” start to creep into your mind.

  • Notice when they start veering into negative territory: When your boss gives you feedback, you feel a pang of disappointment and immediately start doubting your abilities. You catch yourself thinking, “I’ll never get it right.”

  • Try to flip the script and replace negative thoughts with more positive ones: Instead of dwelling on those negative thoughts, you take a moment to reframe them. You remind yourself that constructive criticism is an opportunity for growth and learning. You think, “Okay, this is a chance for me to improve and show what I’m capable of.” You focus on the aspects of the project that went well and brainstorm ways to address the feedback positively.

It’s not easy, but with a little practice, you’ll be a pro at keeping those bad vibes at bay.

Practice Gratitude:

When you make gratitude a regular thing, your mental well-being gets a serious boost.

A study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that keeping a gratitude journal for just two weeks can lead to increased happiness and life satisfaction. Another study by the University of California, Berkeley, found that individuals who practiced gratitude experienced better sleep quality and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Here’s how to make gratitude part of your everyday life:

Grab yourself a gratitude journal. It’s like a diary, but instead of ranting about your day, you jot down things you’re thankful for.

Spread the love by expressing gratitude to the people in your life. A simple “thank you” can go a long way, trust me.

Don’t forget to find the silver lining in tough times. It might not be easy, but there’s always something to be grateful for, even in the darkest of moments.

Finding those moments of gratitude, even when things are tough, can seriously turn things around. You might just be surprised at how much better you feel when you start counting your blessings.

Surround Yourself with Positivity:

Your environment has a huge impact on your mindset.

If you’re constantly surrounded by negativity, it’s going to seep into your brain, but the opposite is also true- surround yourself with positive influences, and you will be more positive.

Take a look around and identify the sources of negativity in your life. Maybe it’s that toxic friend who always brings you down, or maybe it’s the never-ending stream of doom and gloom on your social media feed. Whatever it is, it’s time to kick it to the curb.

Here’s how to replace the negative in your environment with the positive:

  • Cultivate supportive relationships. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and make you feel like a million bucks.

  • Put a cap on the negative vibes by limiting your exposure to all that junk on social media and TV.

  • Create a space that’s like a little slice of positivity paradise. Whether it’s filling your home with plants or surrounding yourself with inspiring quotes, make sure your environment reflects the good stuff in life.

Embrace Self-Compassion:

Self-compassion is all about treating yourself with the same love and kindness you’d give to your best friend.

To really be kind to yourself, you need to kick that mean inner critic to the curb. You know the one — the voice in your head that’s always telling you you’re not good enough.

Here are a few simple practices to get you started:

  • Practice mindfulness and self-awareness: Take a moment to tune in to how you’re feeling and what you need. Whether it’s a deep breath or a gentle reminder that you’re doing the best you can, permit yourself to just be.

  • Treat yourself with kindness and understanding: Imagine you’re talking to a friend who’s going through a tough time. What would you say to them? Now, say those same kind words to yourself.

  • Learn from setbacks and failures without self-judgment: We all mess up sometimes, and that’s okay. Instead of beating yourself up over your mistakes, see them as opportunities for growth and learning. You’re not perfect, and that’s what makes you human.

Engage in Positive Activities:

Life’s too short to spend it doing things that suck the joy out of you, so make it a priority to engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

How do you figure out what those activities are? Take a minute to think about what lights you up inside. Maybe it’s painting, hiking, or baking cookies from scratch. Whatever it is, make it a priority to carve out time for those hobbies and interests that make you happy.

Here are a few simple ways to do it:

  • Mindful breathing exercises: Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breath. Close your eyes, take a deep breath through your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth. It’s like hitting the reset button on your brain.

  • Engaging in creative pursuits: Whether it’s doodling in a notebook or writing a poem, creative expression is like a breath of fresh air for your soul. So, don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild and see where it takes you.

  • Participating in acts of kindness and service: There’s nothing quite like the warm feeling you get from helping others. Whether volunteering at a soup kitchen or simply holding the door open for someone, acts of kindness are like little love notes to the universe.

The TL; DR version of this boils down to:

  • Understand the power of your thoughts and how they influence your emotions and behaviors.

  • Practice gratitude

  • Surround yourself with positivity

  • Embrace self-compassion

  • Engage in positive activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

Always remember to be patient with yourself and give yourself grace along the way.
